In the wake of the victory

After the capture of Naples, several divisions from the Eighth and 5th armies were dispatched to England for invasion training. The replacement divisions were a mixture of American, British, Canadian, Indian, New Zealand, Polish, and French units. This jumble of soldiers was not only difficult to command and control, but most of the units also lacked combat experience. Reorganizing and preparing for combat took time. In the meantime, the Germans strengthened their defensive positions.

The Allied attacks on the Winter Line (the name given the German defensive line in Italy) began in late November and lasted nearly a month, but with no success. The bitterly cold weather, the skillfully built German defenses, and the inexperience of the Allied units all combined to bring an end to the uninterrupted advance of British and American land, air, and naval forces that began on the beaches of North Africa one year earlier.
